Very few of these old sugar mills still remains, certainly not operational and mostly in ruins or only the stone chimney. Mont Desert Carrié found in Mahebourg is believed to be what today is known as the Mon Desert Mon Tresor (MDMT) Sugar Estate. What says so? These two chimneys in their same probable distance and look can similarly be found on the estate of MDMT as remains of the old mill. No longer used of course but these chimneys are now integrated among the other new structures.
Mon Desert Mon Tresor has also recently closed down and the land is supposed to be converted into something else which could be profitable. Even though the early sugar mill was defined to be in Mahebourg, the exact region is more or less Plaine Magnien.
On our recent quest, we have chased all these remaining chimneys in Mauritius and you can view them all here.
