Bicycle racing in Mauritius dates back since the early 20th century. These events are very popular back in those days and participants during such occasions are quite a lot too. Bicycle racing are organized every year now and the categories vary depending on the bicycle types also. In the beginning mostly road bicycles were involved but today mountain bikes have their own category also. For some it is a serious competition and for others it is just for fun.

One of the evidence that this discipline meant to the Mauritians is also the fact that the town of Curepipe had its own velodrome and bicycle race track since late 1930s.
