Port Louis Harbour and Waterfront 1970s

During the 1960s/1970s, after the dismantling of the railways and the cranes in front of the harbour, one could approach as close as nearly ‘pied-dans-l’eau’ to the harbour and admire those big ships which at that time would come very close to the docks. The waterfront was of a totally different setting and that was a very praised entertainment to have some relax time and admire the view. Residents of Port Louis were very acquainted to that spot specially on Sunday afternoons during family strolls where they would spend some time there and also in the gardens of Les Salines (Sir Robert Edward Hart Garden).

Unfortunately today this view has disappeared, not for the so-bad but for sure the ships no longer come this close to the port. Most of the buildings in this image have been replaced by newer ones and of obstrusive heights; namely the Government Printing building now replaced by the State Bank, the Club Mediteranean replaced by the Port Louis Waterfront building, and of course, the Caudan Basin replaced by the Caudan Waterfront…
