Port Louis – Royal Street – 1970s

Starting in front of the Government House up to China Town, Royal Street is among the most famous streets in Port Louis due to the number of commercial buildings and others. Starting in front of the Government House, this street is now a one-way traffic towards Plaine Verte and famous buildings like The Mauritius Commercial Bank, the Bank of Mauritius, the Jummah Mosque and lots of hardware stores can be found operating there. Whilst quite some have already disappeared (Boulet Rouge, Triangle Rouge etc) and replaced by modern buildings there still exists some old traders at certain addresses.

The famous Jummah Mosque occupies a whole block on this street and a lot of chinese shops also continue to operate nearing China Town. In the 1960s/70s, the Royal Street was still two-way traffic, but with the change of routing in Place D’Armes and related junctions, a lot of other streets in Port Louis were also adjusted.
