This little island in the Indian Ocean, small as it appears on a world map, Mauritius, has had some many interesting visits throughout its history, and this ranging from: famous poets and writers (Charles Baudelair, Mark Twain etc), well-known navigators (La Perouse, Livingstone, Bougainville etc), Royal visits (Duke of Edimbourg, Duke of Manchester, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, Princess Alexandra etc), important personalities (Gandhi, Pope Jean Paul II), among much others.

Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra was supposed to visit Mauritius much earlier in 1967-1968, but due to the many revolts that arose due to the fight against Mauritius towards Independance, her visit had to be reported to a later date which finally took place in 1972. In the above picture she visits the Central Market of Port Louis among other places and is accompanied by Sir Gaetan Duval, The Commissioner of Police Jacques Ribet, Sir Angus Ogilvy, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam at the back, Vishnu Luchmeenaraidoo etc. During her visit, Princess Alexandra also inaugurated the University of Mauritius as Chancellor and Dr Octave Wiehe was the Vice-Chancellor.
